Axis is a moderate out-and-back hike of about 6.5 miles in the Red Rock Ranger District of Coconino National Forest in Arizona, managed by the Forest Service. The route gains about 429 feet, from a low point of roughly 4,216 feet to a high of about 4,618 feet. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Sedona show October highs around 79°F with lows near 51°F, and April highs around 75°F with lows near 44°F. Summer highs there typically reach the mid-90s. The trail is open to both horses and bikes. Rover, a hike, and Ground Control, a mountain biking route, both start about 0.3 miles away. Bear Mountain Area, a climbing area, is about 1.7 miles off, and Crescent Moon Ramada offers camping about 4.5 miles away.
