Brittsan Rock

Brittsan Rock is a climbing area in southern Oregon, about 4 miles from the town of Callahan. It sits among a cluster of climbing spots, with Orphan Rock and Inca Rock each about 0.1 mile away and Land of Oz about 0.3 mile off. The name is a tribute to Rick Brittsan, the climber who helped establish the area in the 1980s. The routes here are a mix of sport and trad, with five routes in all. The grades run from 5.3 to 5.6 on the YDS scale. Animal Quackers is the only trad route, and it's a 5.3 first ascended by Rick Brittsan and Gary Blakely in 1984. Duck Soup, at 5.6, is the hardest of the five. Soup and Quackers, Duck Walk and THEUFA are all sport routes. For timing, late spring and early fall are the most comfortable. Typical averages from a nearby weather station show June highs around 75°F with only about seven wet days, and September highs near 78°F with about five wet days. That station sits roughly 1,300 feet lower than the climbing area, so temperatures up high run cooler. Winter is cold and damp, with highs in the mid-40s and rain on most days from November through March. Callahans Climbing Trail is about half a mile away. Paddlers can find Morgan Creek about 4 miles off and the Williams River about 5 miles away.
