Echo Canyon is a hard hike in Nevada's Ruby Mountains Wilderness, part of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest's Mountain City-Ruby Mountains-Jarbidge Ranger District. The route is an out-and-back that climbs from about 7,500 feet to nearly 10,000 feet, with a total elevation gain of 2,861 feet over a distance of about 6.3 miles. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is open year-round. The trail is natural-surfaced and allows horses, but bikes are not permitted. That makes it a route for hikers on foot or on horseback, with no room for mountain bikes. For a full day, plan on several hours on the trail. The climb is steep, and the high point at 9,866 feet sits well above the starting point at 7,542 feet. Nearby, North Furlong and Kleckner Creek are both within about 3 miles. Thomas Canyon Campground is about 6 miles away, and Lamoille Canyon, a climbing area, is about 6 miles off.
