North Furlong is a short, easy out-and-back hike in the Mountain City-Ruby Mountains-Jarbidge Ranger District of Nevada's Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The trail is about 2 miles long, with a total elevation gain of 512 feet, and it is managed by the Forest Service. The route starts at a low point of about 6,656 feet and climbs to a high of about 6,876 feet. The steepest stretch comes early on, around 0.2 miles in, with a grade of about 15 percent. The trail is natural-surfaced and allows horses, and bikes are not permitted. For comfortable weather, aim for late spring or early fall. Typical averages from the nearby Lamoille Yost weather station run to highs around 65°F in May and 76°F in September, while July and August average highs in the mid-80s. That station sits roughly 1,000 feet lower than the trail's high point, so temperatures on the hike run cooler. The trip takes about an hour, and the trail is open year-round. Long Canyon is about a mile away, and Segunda Creek and Lower Segunda Mine are each within about 1.6 miles. Thomas Canyon Campground, about 8.5 miles off, offers a place to stay.
