Spence Mountain is a summit in southern Oregon, about 8 miles from the community of Running Y Ranch. Several hiking routes converge on the mountain, so you can build a summit outing from more than one direction. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. A nearby weather station at Howard Prairie Dam typically averages highs around 79°F in July and August, with lows in the mid-40s and only a few wet days each month. That station sits well below the summit, so temperatures up high run cooler. Winter there brings highs in the mid-30s and frequent snow days, and spring stays cold and wet into May. Spence Peak Trail and Upper Hooligan both lie about 0.2 miles from the summit, with North Ridge about 0.3 miles away. For something different, Spence Mountain Bouldering is about 2.6 miles off.
