Mazama is a moderate out-and-back hike in southern Oregon, about 7 miles from the community of Modoc Point. The route starts at roughly 4,160 feet and climbs to a high point of 5,053 feet, with a total elevation gain of about 1,510 feet over the course of the 9.7-mile round trip. The steepest stretch comes at about 4.4 miles in, where the grade reaches 14 percent. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Howard Prairie Dam show July and August highs around 79°F with only two or three wet days a month, while winter brings highs in the mid-30s and regular snow days from December through February. The hike takes about four hours to complete. Chinquapin and Nighthawk both start just 0.1 mile away, and Captain Jack and Modoc are each about 0.9 mile off.
