Chinquapin is a moderate out-and-back hike in southern Oregon, about 7 miles from the town of Modoc Point. The route is roughly 4 miles long, with a total elevation gain of about 2,000 feet, and it reaches a high point of about 5,180 feet. The climb is a round trip, so the 985 feet of elevation gain listed here is one way. The trail starts at about 4,180 feet and climbs to the high point before returning to the starting level. The trip takes about 2.5 hours. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Howard Prairie Dam show July and August highs around 79°F with only two or three wet days a month, while winter brings highs in the mid-30s and regular snow days. Several other hikes sit close by. Nighthawk and Mazama are each about 0.1 mile away, and North Ridge and Captain Jack are about 0.9 mile off.
