McCubbins 581 is a hard out-and-back hike in Oregon's Mt. Hood National Forest, within the Barlow Ranger District. The trail rises from about 3,200 feet to a high point of about 3,520 feet, with a total elevation gain of about 1,630 feet over the course of the round trip. The route is roughly 10.7 miles long and has a steady climb, with the steepest stretch at about 0.5 miles in, where the grade reaches about 22 percent. The trail surface is natural, and the Forest Service manages the land. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. A nearby weather station at Government Camp, about 12 miles away, records typical July and August highs around 70°F with lows near 48°F and only about four wet days a month. That station sits roughly 460 feet higher than the trail's high point, so temperatures on the trail run a little warmer. The hike takes about 4.5 hours. Several other hikes start close by, including McCubbins 582 and McCubbins 580, and the Clear Creek paddling route is about half a mile away. White River Station campground, about 2.5 miles off, offers a place to stay.
