McCubbins 578 is a moderate hike of about 3.5 miles in the Barlow Ranger District of Mt. Hood National Forest, managed by the Forest Service. The route is an out-and-back that rises from about 3,080 feet to 3,369 feet, with a total climb of about 615 feet. The steepest section comes within the first third of the trail, at about 12%, and the grade tapers from there. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from the nearby Government Camp weather station put July and August highs around 70°F with only about four wet days a month. Winter months run cold and wet, with highs in the mid-30s and lows near 26°F. The hike takes about 1.5 hours. Clear Creek campground and the Rim Rock hike both sit within about a mile. White River Station campground is about 3 miles away, and the White River offers canoeing about 7 miles out.
