The Ceiling is a climbing area in the Mohonk Preserve in New York, managed by a non-governmental organization. The name links to the route of the same name, a trad climb of 5.6 that was first ascended by Bill Shockley and Doug Kerr in 1953. The preserve holds a cluster of climbing areas within about a tenth of a mile, so The Ceiling sits among several other named spots, including e. The Mac Wall (Something Interesting), c. Frog's Head - the Arch and b. Jackie and friends. The climbing here runs from trad routes on the easier end to a 5.11+ line. Of the 26 routes, 22 are trad, three are mixed and one is sport. The median grade is 5.8, with Vicious Rumors at 5.11+ as the hardest. Summer is the most comfortable time to climb. Typical averages from the nearby Mohonk Lake weather station put July highs around 83°F and lows near 64°F, while winter brings highs in the mid-30s and regular snow days from December through February. The Millbrook Ridge Trail and Old Minnewaska Trail lie within a mile, and King's Lane is about a mile away.
