The route rises from a starting elevation of about 1,417 feet to a high point of 1,533 feet, with a total elevation gain of 2,589 feet and a total loss of 2,815 feet. It is rated moderate. The trail is a long, steep climb, and the route is not a loop. Plan on about four hours for the trip. Bikes and horses are not allowed. For comfortable weather, aim for late spring or early fall. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Stormville, NY, run to highs around 72°F in May and 74°F in September, with July the warmest month at about 83°F. That station sits roughly 600 feet lower than the trail's high point, so temperatures on the ridge run cooler. The Casino Trail starts just 0.1 mile away, and the Fishkill Ridge Trail and Dry Brook Trail are each about a mile off. Storm King Mountain, a climbing area, lies about 4.4 miles away.
