Upper Matrix is a bouldering area in Pennsylvania, about 0.8 miles from Mount Gretna Heights. It sits among a cluster of climbing areas, with The Matrix Area and the Prow Area each about 0.1 mile away and Highball about 0.2 mile off. The closest trail is the Chautauqua Trail, roughly 0.9 mile away. The area is a bouldering destination, with six routes all rated on the V scale. The easiest are Particle Man and Shroom Star at V1, and the hardest is Jolie at V8. The median grade is V3, so climbers can find problems across a range of difficulty. For timing, late spring and early fall are the most comfortable. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Lebanon run to highs around 72°F in May and 76°F in September, while July highs average about 84°F. That station sits roughly 438 feet lower than the area, so temperatures here run a little cooler. Other climbing areas close by include the Prow Area and Highball, and the Fraggle Rock Trail offers mountain biking about 0.8 mile away.
