Top Lake is an easy hike in the Clackamas River Ranger District of Mt. Hood National Forest in Oregon, managed by the Forest Service. The trail is about a mile long, with a total elevation gain of 189 feet, and it makes a short out-and-back from the low point at about 5,199 feet to the high point at about 5,353 feet. The steepest stretch comes at about 0.3 miles, with a grade of about 12 percent. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Santiam Junction show July and August highs around 76°F with lows near 42°F, while winter highs there stay in the mid-30s. That station sits well below the trail, so temperatures on the route run cooler. Red Lake Trail #719 is about 0.2 miles away, and Timber Lake and Double Peaks are within half a mile. For an overnight stay, Camp Ten (Olallie) is about a mile off.
