Collings Mountain is a hard hike of about 12.8 miles round trip in the Siskiyou Mountains Ranger District of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forests in southern Oregon. The trail climbs from a low point of about 2,007 feet to a high point of about 3,423 feet, with a total elevation gain and loss of about 4,319 feet. The steepest part comes at about the first mile, where the grade reaches nearly 39 percent. The route is an out-and-back, and it's a long, steep day. Plan for about six and a half hours on the trail. Bikes are allowed, and the trail surface is natural. It is not accessible. Late spring and early fall tend to be the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from the nearby Yreka, California weather station run to highs around 74°F in May and 70°F in October, while July and August average highs near 93°F. That station sits about 700 feet below the high point, so temperatures on the mountain run a bit cooler. The Grouse Loop starts just 0.1 mile away, and the Sinns Bar hike is about half a mile off. For an overnight stay, Hart-Tish Park at Applegate Lake and Tipsu Tyee Campground are both within about a mile.
