Captain Jack is a moderate out-and-back hike in southern Oregon, about 6 miles from the community of Modoc Point. The route rises from a low point of about 4,550 feet to a high of roughly 5,280 feet, with a total elevation gain of about 922 feet over a round trip of about 5.7 miles. The steepest stretch comes at about 1.9 miles in, where the grade reaches nearly 39 percent. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Keno show July highs around 88°F with lows near 49°F and only about three wet days. That station sits roughly 1,150 feet lower than the high point, so temperatures on the summit run cooler. The hike takes about 2.5 hours. The Modoc trail starts just 0.1 mile away, and Nighthawk, Chinquapin and Mazama are all within about a mile.
