Cole Spring Trail (226) is a short, easy out-and-back hike in the Sandia Mountain Wilderness, part of the Sandia Ranger District of Cibola National Forest in New Mexico. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail sits within designated wilderness, so it is a compact outing that fits easily into a day spent exploring the surrounding area. The route is about 0.24 miles long, with a total elevation gain of 179 feet from the low point at 7,450 feet to the high point at 7,545 feet. The steepest stretch comes early on, around 0.05 miles in, with a grade of about 10 percent. The climb is gentle overall, and the trail is rated easy. For comfortable weather, late spring and early fall are the best bets. Typical averages from the nearby Sandia Park weather station, which sits about 500 feet lower, show May highs around 73°F and September highs around 77°F, with lows in the low to mid 40s. Mud Spring Trail lies about 0.3 miles away, and Canoncito and Bart's Trail (195) are each about half a mile off. Climbers can find Upper Simms roughly 4 miles away.
