Canoncito is an easy out-and-back hike in the Sandia Ranger District of Cibola National Forest in New Mexico, about 1.6 miles long with a total elevation gain of 184 feet. The trail runs on natural ground and is not accessible, and the Forest Service manages the land. The route starts at a low point of about 7,282 feet and climbs to a high of about 7,476 feet. It is a short, low-effort walk, and the climb is gentle enough to fit easily into a day spent exploring the surrounding trails. For comfortable weather, late spring and early fall are the best bets. Typical averages from the Sandia Park weather station, about 5 miles away, show May highs near 73°F and September highs near 77°F, with lows in the 40s. Winter is cold, with January highs around 44°F and lows near 19°F. The trail is open from April 1 to November 30. Bart's Trail (195) and Faulty both lie about 0.2 miles away, and Cole Spring Trail (226) is about half a mile off. Climbers can find Upper Simms about 4 miles away.
