Mountaintown Creek is a hard hike in the Conasauga Ranger District of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests in north Georgia, within the Cohutta Wildlife Management Area. The State Department of Natural Resources manages the land, and the route is an out-and-back of about 9.3 miles with a total elevation gain of 2,761 feet, peaking at 2,649 feet. The climb is back-loaded, with the steepest stretch at about 0.9 miles in, where the grade reaches 24%. The trail is natural-surfaced and allows bikes, but horses are not permitted. The trip takes about 4.5 hours, and the route is open year-round. For timing, late spring and early fall are the most comfortable. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Jasper run to highs around 75°F in May and 79°F in September, and the station sits well below the trail, so temperatures on the high ground run cooler. Jacks River Fields Campground is about a mile away, and the South Fork hike is 1.3 miles off. The Conasauga River and Bear Creek hikes lie within about 3.5 miles.
