Blue Trail North

Blue Trail North is a bouldering area in Connecticut, about 1.2 miles from the town of Killingworth. It sits among a cluster of climbing spots, with Blue Trail South (UFO) and the Grey Matter Area just 0.1 mile away, and Chatfield Weather Caves at a similar distance. The area is a compact, close-together set of boulders rather than a long route, and it works well as a short stop for climbers who want to pair a few problems with a walk or a paddle nearby. The climbing here is all bouldering, with eight routes spread across the area. The grades run from V0 to V6-7, with the median around V4-5. Death Dagger is the easiest at V0, and Kudu is the hardest at V6-7. The routes are named with a mix of straightforward titles like Topless and Oryx Arete, and some have first ascents listed, such as Mr. Zogg by Shylo and Kudu by Nate Labieniec. For timing, late spring and early fall are the most comfortable. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Mt Carmel show May highs around 71°F and September highs around 76°F, while July peaks near 85°F. The Chimney Trail and Chatfield Alternate Trail are both about half a mile away for a walk. Paddlers can reach the Hammonasset River, roughly 2.7 miles off, or the Coginchaug River, about 9 miles away.
