Bevil Alternate is a short, easy hike in Lake Guntersville State Park in northern Alabama. It runs 0.74 miles one way as an out-and-back, so the full trip is about 1.5 miles. The trail starts at 768 feet, close to its high point of 770 feet, and drops to a low of 686 feet. That means most of the effort comes on the way back. Climbing totals about 63 feet one way, and the steepest stretch, around a 10 percent grade, comes about half a mile in. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from the nearby Guntersville weather station show October highs around 73°F with lows near 53°F, and the trail sits slightly higher than the station, so expect it to run a little cooler. Several other routes start within a short walk, including the Tom Bevill Alternate Trail and Cutchenmine Trail, each about 0.1 miles away. The Guntersville Roof climbing area is just as close, and the Cave hike lies about half a mile off.
