Honeycomb Trail is a hard hike in northern Alabama, set within the Guntersville Reservoir Retained Land managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority. The route is an out-and-back that covers about 17 miles round trip, with a total elevation gain of 602 feet. The trail starts at roughly 620 feet and climbs to a high point of 814 feet, with the steepest stretch at about 2.7 miles in, where the grade reaches 22 percent. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station show October highs around 73°F with lows near 53°F, and April is similar at about 72°F by day and 50°F at night. That station sits a few hundred feet lower than the trail's high point, so temperatures on the higher ground run a little cooler. Thompson Loop is a short hike just 0.7 miles away. Climbers can head to Honeycomb Island, about 1.5 miles off, or Arecibo Boulders, about 2.3 miles away. Paddlers will find Shoal Creek roughly 8 miles from the trail.
