Burnt Timber is a moderate out-and-back hike in Wyoming's Caribou-Targhee National Forest, within the Palisades Ranger District. The trail is about 3.4 miles long, with a one-way elevation gain of 1,971 feet, taking you from a low point of about 6,729 feet to a high of about 8,710 feet. The Forest Service manages the land, and the route is open year-round. The trail is natural-surfaced and allows both horses and bikes, so it works for riders and pack animals as well as hikers. That makes it a flexible option for a day on foot or on horseback, with the climb spread across the full length of the route. Big Basin lies about half a mile away, and Oat Canyon and Deadhorse Canyon are both within 2 miles. For an overnight stay, Alpine Campground & Group Area is about 4.2 miles off.
