Big Basin is a hard hike in Wyoming's Caribou-Targhee National Forest, within the Palisades Ranger District. The trail is an out-and-back that climbs from about 6,600 feet to nearly 9,200 feet, with a total elevation gain of 2,718 feet over a distance of about 9 miles. The Forest Service manages the land, and the route is open year-round. The trail is natural-surfaced and allows both horses and bikes. That makes it a versatile option for riders and pack animals, though the climb is steep enough to demand careful planning. Burnt Timber lies about half a mile away, and Oat Canyon and Long Springs Trail are each roughly 2 miles off. For an overnight base, Alpine Campground & Group Area is about 4 miles away.
