The Barred Owl is an easy, out-and-back hike in Tennessee, set about a mile from Collegedale. The route is short and gentle, covering roughly 1.5 miles with a total elevation gain of about 60 feet. The climb is slight, with the steepest stretch at about 0.26 miles in, where the grade reaches 7%, and the high point sits at about 1,050 feet. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station run to highs around 74°F in both April and October, while July and August average about 90°F. The station sits several hundred feet below the trail, so temperatures on the higher ground tend to run a bit cooler. The trail is close to several other outings. Big Red, Coyote and Rolling Green are all about 0.2 miles away, and Goliath Wall, a climbing area, is about a mile off.
