Shamu is a bouldering area in Pennsylvania, about 0.8 miles from Mount Gretna Heights. It sits among a cluster of climbing spots, with the Smiley Area, Smiley Boulder and Box Boulders all about 0.1 mile away. The area is a bouldering destination, with 13 routes on the V scale, ranging from V0 to V8. The easiest is Baby Signs at V0, and the hardest is Heaven at V8. Shamu Dihedral is a V4 boulder with a first ascent by Joel or Chet, and Choppy is a V6 boulder with a first ascent by Chet Roy. For timing, late spring and early fall are the most comfortable. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Lebanon run from highs around 72°F in May to 76°F in September, with July the warmest at about 84°F. That station sits roughly 437 feet lower than the boulders, so temperatures on the rock run a little cooler. The Fraggle Rock Trail, a mountain biking route, is about 0.4 mile away, and the Chautauqua Trail hike is about 1.1 miles off.
