Trail of Ferns is an easy hike in the Central Coast Ranger District-ODNRA of Siuslaw National Forest in Oregon. The route is 1.5 miles long, with about 208 feet of total climb and loss, and it is a back-loaded out-and-back, so the steeper part comes at the start. The high point is 966 feet, and the low point is 904 feet, with the steepest grade at about 0.4 miles in, climbing 11%. Late summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Corvallis show July and August highs in the low 80s with only about four wet days a month, while winter brings highs in the upper 40s and rain on more than 20 days. That station sits several hundred feet lower, so temperatures on the trail run a little cooler. The hike takes about half an hour. Blodgett Staircase and Collarbone Alley are both within a mile, and Marys Peak Campground is about 4.5 miles away. Paddlers can reach Greasy Creek at about 4.4 miles.
