About Cascade Head Biosphere Collaborative
The Cascade Head Biosphere Collaborative is a nonprofit established in 2023 to steward the Cascade Head Biosphere Region, a 102,110-acre UNESCO-designated site on Oregon's central coast originally designated in 1976 and reauthorized in 2017. The region encompasses the Cascade Head Scenic Research Area, Experimental Forest, Preserve, and Marine Reserve, protecting a rare ecosystem that includes 7 miles of Pacific coastline with native coastal prairie headlands, the Salmon River and its restored estuary, densely forested uplands, and a marine reserve. The landscape supports diverse wildlife including black bear, cougar, elk, osprey, bald eagle, five salmon species, and four federally listed endangered species: spotted owl, marbled murrelet, coho salmon, and Oregon silverspot butterfly.
The Collaborative works with federal and state agencies, tribal partners, nonprofits, and private landowners to advance education, climate research, and community stewardship. The organization offers experiential programming including natural arts and science field experiences, workshops, and guided activities led by local naturalists and artists. Visitors engage in kayaking, birdwatching, diving, hiking, fishing, and research activities throughout the region.
