Phil's is a 16-mile out-and-back hike in the Bend/Fort Rock Ranger District of Oregon's Deschutes National Forest, managed by the Forest Service. The trail rises from about 3,890 feet to a high point of 5,054 feet, with a total elevation gain of 1,438 feet over the course of the trip. The climb is steepest around mile 5.8, where the grade reaches about 14 percent. The route is rated hard, and the trail surface is natural. Bikes are allowed, but horses are not. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Bend show July highs around 84°F with lows near 49°F and only about two wet days in the month. That station sits roughly 1,400 feet below the trail, so temperatures on the route run cooler. The hike is open year-round, and the trip is estimated to take about six hours. Marvin's Garden and the Cascade Highlands Trail both start within a quarter mile of the route. Climbers can find Skyliners Road about 1.3 miles away, and the Deschutes River offers paddling about 2.8 miles off.
