Old Summit is a hard hike in Oregon's Mount Jefferson Wilderness, within the Sisters Ranger District of Deschutes National Forest. The trail is an out-and-back of about 11.6 miles, with a total elevation gain of 1,841 feet, and it starts at roughly 4,786 feet, rising to a high point of about 5,414 feet. The steepest stretch comes early, around 0.76 miles in, with a grade of about 22 percent. The route is on natural surface, and horses are allowed. Bikes are not. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is open year-round. Plan for about five hours on foot. Nearby, the Oregon Volcanoes climbing area sits about a mile away, and the Old Summit Trail #4014 and the Pacific Crest Trail - Wif1 - Oregon are both within about a mile and a half. For an overnight base, Link Creek campground is about 3.6 miles off.
