Trail #1 - Island Lake is an easy out-and-back hike in Oregon's Deschutes National Forest, within the Sisters Ranger District. The trail is about 3 miles long, with a total elevation gain of 549 feet, and it starts at the high point of 4,685 feet. The climb is back-loaded, with the steepest stretch at about a mile in, and the route descends back to the starting point. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Santiam Junction show July and August highs around 76°F with lows near 42°F, while winter highs there stay in the upper 30s. The hike takes about 1.5 hours. Circle Lake XC is half a mile away, and Trail #4 - Link Lake Cutoff and Two Buttes Cutoff are both within about a mile. Big Lake campground is roughly 2.8 miles off.
