Lookout Mountain is a short out-and-back hike of about 0.9 miles in Oregon's Ochoco National Forest, within the Paulina Ranger District. The route starts at 5,745 feet and climbs to a high point of 5,745 feet, which makes the trip an easy way to add elevation to a day of exploring the surrounding trails. The climb is steep in the first part of the route, with the steepest grade reaching 22% around 0.38 miles from the start. The total gain is 553 feet, and the round trip returns to the starting point, so the one-way figure of 262 feet is half the total. The hike pairs easily with several other outings. Baneberry Trail and Baneberry are both within about 0.4 miles, and Independent Mine is a similar distance away. For an overnight stay, Ochoco Forest Camp sits about 5 miles off.
