Lodgepole is a 5.4-mile out-and-back hike on natural trail in Oregon's Mt. Hood National Forest, within the Clackamas River Ranger District. It is a moderate route with a total elevation gain of 1,082 feet, and it starts and ends at around 4,600 feet, climbing to a high point of about 4,850 feet. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Government Camp show July and August highs around 70°F with only about four wet days a month, while winter brings highs in the mid-30s and frequent rain. The trip takes about 2.5 hours. The steepest stretch comes at around 2.4 miles, with a grade of about 23%. Russ Lake is less than half a mile away, and Olallie Meadow campground and the Olallie Butte Trail are both within a mile. Paddlers can head to the Clackamas River, about 5 miles off.
