Grasshopper is a hard out-and-back hike in the McKenzie River Ranger District of the Willamette National Forest in Oregon, about 25.5 miles long with a total elevation gain of 6,945 feet. The route starts at roughly 4,431 feet and climbs to 5,562 feet at its high point before descending back to the start. The trail is on natural surface, and the Forest Service allows both horses and bikes. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Odell Lake put July and August highs in the low 70s with only a few wet days a month, while winter brings highs in the mid-30s and regular snow from December through March. That station sits about 760 feet lower than the high point, so temperatures up top run cooler. The trip is estimated to take about 12 hours, and the route is open year-round. Grasshopper Meadow is about 3.4 miles away, and Red Diamond Campground is about 3.7 miles off. Augusta Creek offers canoeing about 2.2 miles away, and Walts Wall is a climbing area about 5.5 miles from the trail.
