Deer Creek is an easy 2-mile out-and-back hike in Oregon's Diamond Peak Wilderness, part of the Crescent Ranger District of Deschutes National Forest. The trail climbs about 160 feet one way, from a low point near 5,612 feet to a high of about 5,777 feet. The steepest stretch comes at roughly 0.57 miles, with a 10% grade. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from the nearby Odell Lake weather station run to highs in the low 70s in July and August, with only a few wet days a month. That station sits nearly 1,000 feet lower than the trail, so temperatures up here run cooler. The hike stays open year-round. Horses are allowed on the natural-surface trail. Trapper Creek Campground is about 2.7 miles away, and Gold Lake Campground is about 4.4 miles away. Yoran Lake, a hike about 1.2 miles off, and the Midnight Lake Tie, about 1.6 miles away, make good additions to a day in the area.
