Battle Ax Mountain is an easy hike in the Bull of the Woods Wilderness, part of the Detroit Ranger District of the Willamette National Forest in Oregon. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is about a mile from the start point. The route is an out-and-back that gains about 577 feet one way, with a total round-trip climb of about 1,488 feet. The steepest stretch comes at about half a mile in, with a grade of about 31 percent. The trail surface is natural, and bikes are not allowed. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Santiam Junction show July and August highs around 76°F with lows near 42°F. That station sits well below the mountain, so temperatures up high run cooler. Battle Ax Mountain Trail #3340 and the Beachie hike both lie about 0.4 miles away. Elk Lake Campground is about 0.7 miles off, and Battle Ax Creek offers canoeing about 2.2 miles away.
