Elkhorn Ridge Trail #3347 is a 10.7-mile out-and-back route in the Detroit Ranger District of Oregon's Willamette National Forest. The trail climbs to a high point of about 4,750 feet, with a total gain and loss of roughly 4,570 feet over the course of the trip. The climb is steady, and the steepest stretch comes at about 1.6 miles in, where the grade reaches 47 percent. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. At Santiam Junction, a nearby weather station about 28 miles away and roughly 1,000 feet below the trail, July and August typically average highs around 76°F with lows near 42°F. That station sits lower than the trail, so temperatures on the ridge run cooler. The hike is rated expert, and the Forest Service manages the land. The trip takes about six hours. French Creek Ridge lies just 0.2 miles away, and Opal Lake is about 0.7 miles off. Paddlers can head to French Creek, about 2.3 miles away, and Humbug Campground is roughly 4.9 miles from the trail.
