Slate Mountain West is an easy out-and-back hike in Idaho's Caribou-Targhee National Forest, within the Westside Ranger District. The trail is about 2.6 miles long, with an elevation gain of 850 feet, and it rises from a low point of about 6,144 feet to a high of about 6,977 feet. The route is on natural surface, and it is open to both horses and bikes. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is open year-round. The Elk Meadows Loop lies about half a mile away, and the West Mink RNA and Upper Crystal are each about 1.1 miles off. For an overnight stay, Mink Creek Group Site Campground is about 2.3 miles away.
