Shoup-Elk City is a hard hike of about 45 miles in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, part of the North Fork Ranger District of Idaho's Salmon-Challis National Forest. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is a natural-surface route that climbs from about 6,900 feet to about 8,500 feet in an out-and-back trip with a total elevation gain of 1,060 feet. The hike's length and climb make it a serious outing. Plan for a full day on foot, and look for other routes close by to extend your time in the area. Nearby, the Stripe Creek-Divide and WEST HORSE CUTOFF hikes both lie about 4 miles away, Roan Ridge is about 4.3 miles off, and Wendover Campground offers a place to stay about 6.6 miles away.
