Storm King is a hard hike in Oregon's Deschutes National Forest, within the Bend/Fort Rock Ranger District. The route is 8.5 miles long and rises about 569 feet from its starting point, which sits near 4,555 feet, to a high point of 5,010 feet. The climb is steepest at about 3.5 miles in, where the grade reaches 8%. Bikes are allowed on the natural-surfaced trail, and horses are not. The Forest Service manages the land, and the route is open year round. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from the nearby Sunriver weather station show July highs around 84°F with lows near 41°F. That station sits roughly 830 feet below the high point, so temperatures up high run cooler. Nearby, the Larsen hike and the Funner mountain biking area are each about a mile away. The Grand Slam hike is 1.4 miles off, and the Widgi Creek climbing area is about 3 miles away.
