Sandstone is a hard hike of about 5.4 miles in the Rogue-Umpqua Divide Wilderness, part of the Tiller Ranger District of the Umpqua National Forest in Oregon. The trail is managed by the Forest Service and is not accessible. The route is an out-and-back that climbs from about 3,694 feet to roughly 5,293 feet, with a total gain of about 2,565 feet. The steepest stretch comes at about 1.7 miles in, where the grade reaches 33%. Horses are allowed, but bikes are not. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Crater Lake show July and August highs around 69°F with only about four wet days a month, while winter months bring highs in the low 30s and rain on most days. Nearby, Anderson Mountain Trail is about 2.1 miles away, Falcon Creek campground is about 2.6 miles away, and Golden Stairs Trail is about 3 miles away. Climbers can find Rabbit Ears (Rogue) about 3.8 miles off.
