Root Down is a moderate out-and-back hike of about 1.3 miles in the Central Coast Ranger District-ODNRA of the Siuslaw National Forest in Oregon. The route starts at a low point of about 1,000 feet and climbs to roughly 1,500 feet, with a total gain of about 1,000 feet for the round trip. The steepest stretch comes early, around 0.4 miles in, with a grade of about 28%. Summer is the most comfortable time to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at Corvallis put July and August highs in the low 80s and only about four wet days a month. That station sits roughly 900 feet lower than the trail, so temperatures on the hike run cooler. Carl's Adventure, a mountain biking route, lies about 0.1 mile away, and the Mohawk and Collarbone Alley hikes are each about 0.2 mile off. Marys Peak Campground is about 4 miles away for an overnight base.
