Shelving Rock is a climbing area in the Lake George Wild Forest in New York, managed by the State Department of Conservation. It sits among a cluster of other climbing spots, so it works well as one stop in a day of exploring the surrounding rock. Summer is the most comfortable time to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station in Whitehall show July highs around 83°F with lows near 61°F, and September still runs in the mid-70s by day. That station sits a few hundred feet lower than the climbing area, so temperatures up high run a little cooler. Desert Shield Area and Carhartt Wall are each about 0.1 mile away, and Neanderthal Cave is about 0.2 mile off. For a walk, the Red Rock Bay to Ridge Trail is about 1.5 miles away.
