Chatfield Trail is a short, easy hike in Black Rock Forest in New York, managed by a non-governmental organization. The trail is 0.75 miles long, with a total elevation gain of 149 feet. It is a point-to-point route, and the climb is front-loaded, with the steepest stretch at about 0.7 miles in. Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable times to go. Typical averages from a nearby weather station at West Point put May highs around 72°F and September highs around 76°F, while July averages about 85°F. That station sits well below the trail, so temperatures on the higher ground run cooler. The Arthur Trail starts just 0.2 miles away, and the Scenic Trail and Compartment Trail are each about 0.4 miles off. For a longer outing, Storm King Mountain, a climbing area, is about 3.7 miles away.
