Madera Locura is an easy out-and-back hike in the Sandia Ranger District of Cibola National Forest in New Mexico, about 2 miles long with a 390-foot elevation gain from a low point of 7,264 feet to a high of 7,665 feet. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is natural-surfaced, with horses and bikes allowed. The most comfortable months for a visit are typically late spring and early fall. Typical averages from the Sandia Park weather station, about 4 miles away, run to highs near 73°F in May and 77°F in September, while winter highs sit in the low to mid 40s. The trail is open year-round, and the route is short enough to fit into a day of exploring the surrounding network. La Barba lies just 0.1 mile away, and Pinedrop is about 0.3 mile off.
