Smears for Fears Area is a climbing area in Nevada's Rainbow Mountain Wilderness, on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management's Red Rock/Sloan Field Office. Because it sits inside designated wilderness, visitors should plan around wilderness rules for the area. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons to climb. A nearby weather station records typical average highs around 70°F in April and 75°F in October, with lows near 47°F and 50°F. That station sits about 800 feet lower than the crag, so temperatures up at the rock usually run somewhat cooler. Other climbing is close by. Frigid Air Buttress, Necromancer Wall and Ice Box Canyon Bouldering are each about 0.1 mile away, and the Ice Box Canyon hike is roughly 0.6 mile off. For an overnight stay, Red Rock Canyon Campground is about 6 miles away.
