Black Velvet Wall is a climbing area in Nevada's Rainbow Mountain Wilderness, part of the Bureau of Land Management's Red Rock/Sloan Field Office. It sits about 1.8 miles from the community of Bonnie Springs, which makes it an easy add-on to a day spent exploring the surrounding Red Rock area. The wall's name is its own kind of calling card. It anchors a cluster of climbing spots, and it is a short walk from the The Texas Wall / West Velvet Wall and the North Face. The routes here are mostly trad, with grades ranging from 5.9 up to 5.11d. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station run to highs around 70°F in April and 75°F in October, while July highs average about 95°F. That station sits roughly 770 feet lower than the wall, so temperatures on the rock may run a little cooler. The Descent Black Velvet Peak hike starts right next to the climbing. Lil' Daytona, a mountain biking route, is about 1.6 miles away, and Red Rock Canyon Campground is 8.1 miles off for an overnight stay.
