Whiskey Peak - East is a climbing area in Nevada's Rainbow Mountain Wilderness, on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management's Red Rock/Sloan Field Office. It sits within the wilderness, and the surrounding area is a cluster of climbing spots, with The Rad Cliff, North Face and Black Velvet Canyon Boulders all about 0.1 mile away. The climbing here is traditional, with seven routes spread across the area. The grades run from 5.5 to 5.9 on the YDS scale, and the routes include Microbrew at 5.5, Lazy Buttress at 5.6 and Shaken, Not Stirred at 5.9. The first ascent of Lazy Buttress was recorded in 1973 by Matt McMackin, Nanouk Borche, Joe and Betsy Herbst. Spring and fall are the most comfortable times to visit. Typical averages from a nearby weather station show April highs around 70°F and October highs around 75°F, while July and August average in the mid-90s. That station sits about 900 feet lower than the peak, so temperatures on the mountain run cooler. Red Rock Canyon Campground is about 8 miles away for an overnight stay, and the Descent Black Velvet Peak hike is about 0.4 mile off. Mountain bikers can head to Lil' Daytona, roughly 1.4 miles away.
