Tin Can is a 4-mile out-and-back hike in Nevada's Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, part of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. It rises from about 7,100 feet to about 7,800 feet, with a total elevation gain of roughly 1,568 feet over the course of the trip. The steepest stretch comes around the 1.2-mile mark, with a grade of about 14 percent. The Forest Service manages the trail, and the route is natural-surfaced. Bikes and horses are both allowed, so it works for riders and pack animals as well as hikers. Late spring through early fall is the most comfortable time to go. A nearby weather station at Mt Charleston, at 7,460 feet, records typical averages of about 74°F highs in June and 72°F in September, with July the warmest month at around 79°F. The Robber's Roost Trail, Hike-A-Bike and the Link Trail all start about a tenth of a mile away, and the Robber's Roost climbing area is about 0.2 miles off. For an overnight stay, Hilltop campground is about half a mile from the trailhead.
