Toolbox-Herd Creek is a hard hike in Idaho's Jim McClure-Jerry Peak Wilderness, part of the Lost River Ranger District of the Salmon-Challis National Forest. The trail is an out-and-back that starts at about 9,780 feet and climbs to a high point of 9,784 feet, with a total elevation gain of 5,156 feet over the course of the trip. The steepest stretch comes at about 1.6 miles in, where the grade reaches 28 percent. The route is about 8.5 miles long and is open year-round. It is a natural-surface trail, and horses are allowed. Plan for about 5.5 hours on the trail. Nearby, the North Fork Big Lost River offers canoeing about 3.3 miles away, and Bartlett Creek and Squib Canyon are hikes within about 4.3 miles. For camping, Phi Kappa Campground sits about 7.6 miles from the trail.
