Toolbox-Herd Creek is a hard hike in Idaho's Jim McClure-Jerry Peak Wilderness, part of the Challis-Yankee Fork Ranger District of the Salmon-Challis National Forest. The Forest Service manages the land, and the trail is a natural-surface out-and-back that climbs from about 6,300 feet to nearly 9,800 feet over a 23-mile round trip, with a total gain of about 3,500 feet. The route is rated hard, and horses are allowed. The trail's natural surface makes it a rugged choice for anyone planning a long day in the high country. West Fork Herd Creek lies about 1.7 miles away, and Herd Creek offers canoeing about 2 miles off. Herd Lake Campground and the Herd Lake Campsite Trail are both within about 3 miles.
